Window

The Russell Senate Office Building is a wonderful building to start with.  I've already posted a few shots of it on this blog before.  Windows like this can only be found on the corner offices of the building on the 4th floor, most of them on the inside of someone's office.  However, this one, on the northeast corner, is gratefully available at the dead end of the hall.  I've gotta get one of these in my house sometime.  A large, proper, looking window.

Stairs of Symmetry

Left is the Russell Senate Office Building, Right is the Supreme Court Building.  There's a joke in here about the two equal branches of government (Congress and the Courts) being like a square peg and a round hole.  The Left is looking down, the Right is looking up.  When I build my own house, I'm going to have to get a staircase like one of these.

The Basement History Walked Through

I love this building.  I always have.  From the first day I walked into it I felt a sense of awe that hasn't worn off a bit.  Yes, the air conditioning is terrible in the summer, the heating is dodgy at best in the winter, and the windows are as drafty as a screen door.  But the bathrooms have marble stalls, the ceilings are high and stately, it is the closest to the Capitol Building of the three Senate Office Buildings (SOBs), and down this corridor walked five US Senators destined to become US Presidents: Warren G. Harding, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard M. Nixon.  The history is here in the red bricks, the waxed floors, and the old pipes.  The Russell Senate Office Building.  

Taken with an iPhone 5s, this image is not about the color, the framing, or even the emptiness of this usually bustling hallway.  It's about the history found in the otherwise unremarkable hallway that thousands of tourists now walk down with Senate interns on their way to the soulless Capitol Building Visitor's Center.  I hope the interns take a few minutes to talk about the mighty Russell.

Looking Up in the Russell Building

Sometimes its not a bad idea to stop where you are, pause, and look up.  There's something about this image of the Russell Senate Office Building Caucus Room's foyer that grabs my attention.  Perhaps it's the warm colors, or the stately architecture.  Whatever it is, I liked it enough to make it the background on my phone.

Taken with an iPhone 5s, this is not a well known location, nor a particularly glamorous site, but photography isn't always about those things.  This one is about pausing in the midst of a busy day and noticing the mundane and beautiful in a place you wouldn't normally look for it.
